On December 16th, 1870, the Cape Hatteras light was activated and the new conical shaped brick tower became the tallest lighthouse in the United States, at 198 feet tall, overall. This photo was taken in 2024 during a renovation phase.

LocationThe lighthouse is located just off Hwy 12 near the village of Buxton, NC. Buxton is located approximately 50 miles south of Nags Head, NC. If you are traveling south on Hwy 12 the turn off is on your left just after you drive through the town. Watch for the signs.
Google Maps HERE HistoryIn 1796 The United States Congress took up the debate as to whether a lighthouse should be constructed on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Shippers had been complaining for years about the dangerous shoals located off the coast. But because of fiscal restraints and indecision, nothing was done for six years. Finally in 1802, money was appropriated to build a light at Cape Hatteras.

Time of day - This location is good for sunrise. LENS - 35mm to 100mm is ideal for the lighthouse and before the sun rises, you can get some good long exposure shots of the old pier remains that are at the beach. |
