Upon an appointment by the Board of Navy Commissioners to examine proposed lighthouse sites on the Great Lakes, Lieutenant G. J. Pendergrast visited Manitowoc in 1837 and reported, “At this place the river is of good size, and may be easily formed into a harbor. The town is at present quite small, but I recommend that the proposed light-house should be erected.” Congress had appropriated $5,000 for the construction of a lighthouse at Manitowoc on March 3, 1837 Depending on the time of the year, there are at least 3 locations to shoot photos of the lighthouse. During summer months, follow signs to the Ferry.
At this location, 200mm lens is good. During winter months, you can park by the boat launch, get out of your car and shoot the lighthouse. Again 200mm lens is good. The final location would be to walk out to the lighthouse and walk on the pier. This walk is not difficult, however it can be a 15 minute walk. At this location, a 24mm to 100mm lens would be appropriate. The grounds are open 24x7 to view outside. |
