Google Maps HERE HistoryThe lighthouse served as a critical aid to vessels transporting goods and passengers to and from the region, which was growing in economic importance due to logging, fishing, and other industries. By providing a steady light and acting as a navigational marker, Eagle Bluff Lighthouse helped reduce shipwrecks and improve safety for sailors navigating the "ports des morts" (Death's Door) passage.
After the conclusion of the Civil War, the Lighthouse Board sent a committee to the western Great Lakes in 1865 to examine the navigational needs of the area. One of the resulting recommendations was a lighthouse on Eagle Bluff that would help commercial ships pass through Strawberry Channel, situated on the eastern side of Green Bay between the Strawberry Islands and Door County Peninsula. Congress appropriated $12,000 for the project on July 28, 1866. Construction began in 1868.
