Initial Establishment (1893): The first lighthouse in Algoma was established in 1893. A modest wooden structure, it stood near the entrance to the harbor. Its purpose was to guide fishermen and other vessels safely to shore, as Algoma had a thriving fishing and lumber industry during this time.

LocationTake Highway 54 from Green Bay to Algoma. Look for the lighthouse atat the shoreline. The lighthouse marks the entrance to the Ahnapee River, guiding vessels into the harbor of Algoma, which was previously known as Ahnapee before changing its name in 1879.

This location is unique during the coldest days of the winter. The Ice forms on Lake Michigan and steam is created with the frigid air temperatures colliding with the cool water temperatures. After a strong east wind in the winter, you can find beautiful ice cycles hanging from the catwalk. Its one of the few lighthouses that you can take photos while using bluetooth connections from inside of your warm car. Time of day - This location is best for sunrise. LENS - 24mm to 200mm would create great images. |
