Initial Establishment (1893): The first lighthouse in Algoma was established in 1893. A modest wooden structure, it stood near the entrance to the harbor. Its purpose was to guide fishermen and other vessels safely to shore, as Algoma had a thriving fishing and lumber industry during this time.

History

Key Historical Highlights:

  1. Steel Tower (1932): In 1932, a new lighthouse structure was built to replace the original wooden one. The current red steel tower, standing at 42 feet, was erected at the end of the north pier. This modern lighthouse came equipped with a Fourth Order Fresnel lens, which significantly improved its range and functionality. The lighthouse was automated soon after, with keepers no longer required on-site.
  2. Transition to Electricity: Over time, the lighthouse was upgraded with modern technology, transitioning from oil lamps to electric lights. This transition helped reduce the need for constant maintenance and improved the visibility of the light for ships navigating Lake Michigan.
  3. Changes in the Harbor: Algoma’s port was heavily used for commercial shipping and fishing until the mid-20th century, but over time, recreational boating and tourism took precedence. The lighthouse remains an iconic symbol of Algoma’s maritime heritage.
  4. Preservation and Tourism: Although the U.S. Coast Guard maintains the lighthouse's functionality as a navigational aid, it is also a popular tourist attraction. Its distinctive red color and picturesque setting on the shores of Lake Michigan make it a favorite subject for photographers and visitors.
Today, the Algoma Pierhead Lighthouse continues to serve as a navigational guide while also standing as a historic landmark that celebrates the town’s connection to Lake Michigan. The lighthouse, along with Algoma's charming harbor, reflects the town's maritime history and its transition from a working port to a tourist destination.
