The Cape Florida Lighthouse is one of the most iconic and historic landmarks in Florida. It is located at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne, just south of Miami.  Originally constructed in 1825, it is the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County.

History

Key Historical Highlights:​
  1. The lighthouse was destroyed in 1836 during the Second Seminole War and later rebuilt in 1846 with a taller design (95 feet).
  2. Played a role in the Second Seminole War when Native American warriors attacked the lighthouse in 1836. The keeper, John Thompson, survived by barricading himself inside.
  3. Was a key marker for escaped slaves and Black Seminoles who sought freedom by sailing to the Bahamas.
Open to the public, with guided tours allowing visitors to climb the 109 steps to the top for stunning views of Biscayne Bay, Miami, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Relatively easy walk from the parking lot to the lighthouse.  There is a tour that you can take, or you can walk to the beach and then along the beach to the lighthouse.
